FXpansion has released DCAM FreeComp, a freeware circuit-modeled bus compressor in VST, AU, and RTAS plugin formats for compatible digital audio workstations.
DCAM FreeComp is an analog-style compressor VST plugin. It mimics the dynamic range reduction characteristics of vintage console compressors. The plugin works especially well for subtle compression of a stereo bus or the master channel.

I have only heard good things about FXpansion’s DCAM circuit-modeling technology. It’s great to see a freeware plugin take advantage of those algorithms. Thanks to DCAM FreeComp’s subtle analog flavor and intuitive control scheme, it can quickly become one of the most popular freeware compressor VST plugins around. Another great tool for bus compression is the Density plugin by Variety Of Sound (especially the recently released mkIII version). Unfortunately, that compressor will only work in 32-bit VST plugin hosts on Windows.
As for the DCAM FreeComp plugin, it is compatible with all major platforms. Simply download the installer from the product page and add it to your digital audio workstation of choice.
DCAM FreeComp can be downloaded for free from FXpansion’s website. If you’re not a registered FXpansion user, simply create an account and request a DCAM FreeComp serial number. The product will be added to your user account, too.

onI have to admit, my previous opinion about this plugin has changed a lot. I just tried to set it up on drum bus and as a master bus gentle compressor in the same project. It took me less than five minutes for both to dial proper settings. What’s more surprising, they behaved much better compared to well established and not free compressor. DCAM FreeComp is definitely worth trying out. It’s a real pleasure to use, because it has so little settings.
Don’t make the same mistake as I did. Don’t be discouraged by sluggish gain reduction needle behavior. It really depends on the material, how quickly or how slow it goes back to starting point.
