The Modern Metal Songwriter releases The Fuzz, a free fuzz distortion plugin for Windows and macOS.
It is Sunday where I’m at, and I’ve just received news of even more fuzz! While Fuzzboy wasn’t directly geared toward my niche interests, The Fuzz certainly is.
Modern Metal Songwriter is a known quantity with our readers, and the latest free release looks to be a real doozy.
At first blush, you’d be forgiven for mistaking The Fuzz for a ProCo Rat. The core trio of controls is effectively identical. However, some exciting features help to set this apart from other fuzz emulations.
The dist knob functions as your input gain, with more gain pushing the distortion to audible levels. If you’re after that woolly fuzz, you’ll be tinkering with this quite a bit.
The Fuzz comes with a filter knob, which I typically leave at 9 to 11 o’clock on the dial. Level serves as your output gain and is great for pushing hard into a cleaner amp.
However, there is a pair of other controls you won’t see in many pedal emulations.
The HPF knob is excellent for clearing out some of the mud from the distorted signal. This helps refine the signal, especially when dealing with lower tunings.
The Fuzz also has a mix control, meaning you can distort in parallel as needed. This opens it up to quite a bit of flexibility, as you can add that gnarly fuzziness to drums and vocals with wild abandon.
I’d be fooling myself if I didn’t test if it can doom. It certainly can doom with the best of them. I’ve been using the Prestige amp sim with Fuzzlord Effects doom IR pack for recent riffing. In Drop B and Drop G alike it sounded like I was summoning mountain wizards from the halls of Stygia.
The Fuzz is a fun effect, and the world can always use more fuzz. You can’t get a sandwich for free, but you can doom with the best of them for the cost of nothing.
The Fuzz is available for Windows and Mac computers. Supported plugin formats are VST3, AU, and AAX. It does run on Apple Silicon Macs natively. Your mileage may vary if you want to use it with the Silicon native Pro Tools.
