ViatorDSP Releases FREE Bedroom Compressor MkII

ViatorDSP releases Bedroom Compressor MkII, a freeware compressor plugin for Windows and macOS.

I’m sure there is some sort of treatment for installing dozens upon dozens of compressors. However, I don’t care to find out what it could be.

What is important is that ViatorDSP has debuted another wonderful dynamics processor, and I’m here to tell you about it.

Bedroom Compressor MkII combines two different compression methods, namely VCA and Opto. Selecting between models is a cinch, as you just hit the little toggle and get your desired compression type.

I am a huge fan of the Opto model since it gives you access to controls beyond the general act of compression. Sound-wise, it works well on vocals, guitars, and other instruments that could benefit from gentle leveling.

The VCA model I can definitely see being used for more robust work. The action is a lot grabbier, and you can certainly use it to add some presence or snap to a sound.

I also enjoyed the VCA model on kicks and snares. It works well on pluckier synths, where you might want to shape the signal further beyond the ADSR.

You’ll find a slew of standard controls, with attack and release, threshold, and ratio controls all being present. I assume most folks who download software compressors know how these controls function. Most curious is the knee parameter, which adds nonlinearities to how threshold and ratio interact.

There isn’t much else to say about Bedroom Compressor MkII. It is wonderfully straightforward in how it approaches handling dynamics.

Each control is very deliberate in its placement and function, so you’ve plenty of room to focus on the actual process of mixing. It doesn’t seem to impart much in the way of saturation, instead focusing more on the actual process of compression.

Bedroom Compressor MkII is pay-what-you-want, with no minimum purchase threshold.

If you like what ViatorDSP is doing, then I’m sure they wouldn’t decline a higher payment.

Bedroom Compressor MkII is available for Windows and Mac computers. Supported plugin formats are VST3 and AU. It does have Apple Silicon support, so most users should be covered.
