Korn Is A Free Granular Kontakt Instrument By Cinematique Instruments

Cinematique Instruments have just released a brand new free Kontakt instrument called Korn (and no, it doesn’t have anything to do with nu metal).

Korn features a granular engine, a sample player, and a looper, all packed into an elegant interface. A really powerful feature is its ability to import your samples and having access to a variety of tools to easily manipulate them.

As the library’s name cleverly implies, you can quickly turn any sound into an intricate texture and complex cloud of grains.

Additional effects are provided to conjure up ethereal results, like a tasteful endless reverb, a complex delay, high and low pass filters, a chorus with stereo widening, and a compressor/expander.

At the top of the interface, you can select between three main operating modes of the engine: One Shot, Looper and Granular.

Below that, a handy waveform visualization gives you a useful glance at the imported sample and its looping and sample playback controls.

Underneath the waveform display, you can find a variety of parameters to customize the granularization process. For instance, you can select the grain or loop length in either free, tempo-synced, or random mode.

Then, you can customize the width of the start position variation, enabling you to get everything from dense clouds to more spread-out, particle-like sounds.

Also worth mentioning: if you drop the Vary Start control to a minimum, the slider turns pink, and the mod wheel starts controlling the Sample Start Position for a more expressive and interactive approach.

Furthermore, if you select 4+ in the drop-down menu of Grains, the instrument adds two more grains, one octave up and one octave down, in relation to the sample’s pitch.

You can also access the usual important parameters of Attack, Decay, and Release to shape the overall envelope.

Note that the Sustain control is missing on purpose since the main goal of this instrument is to create long, sustained sounds.

Korn even has an Auto Detection mode for the root note of imported samples, but you can select it manually if you prefer.

It also comes with 20 selected samples that have been handpicked to work well with the instrument, such as a tasty felt piano performance, some distorted guitar lines, female chants, analog synth sweeps, and more.

Overall, it is a very nice instrument while also being free!

Remember that you need to have the full version of Kontakt (v.6 or higher) to run it in your preferred DAW and operating system.
