Analog Obsession offers Room041, a freeware room reverb VST plugin for macOS and Windows.
I have to admit; I’m slow in getting to Analog Obsession, and it seems like I’ve been missing out. Luckily for me, all Analog Obsession plugins are free on Patreon, so I have some catching up to do.
Room041 is the first-ever reverb plugin from Analog Obsession, and at first sight, the GUI looks lovely.
See also: Free Reverb VST PluginsIt’s nice and simple-looking with some surprising additions.
The developer states that the plugin doesn’t attempt to emulate any particular hardware reverb unit. Also, it’s a fully algorithmic reverb plugin, meaning that it doesn’t use convolution.
The first thing you’ll notice is the bright red power button that gives it the analog hardware look.
Next, you’ve got Stereo Separation, Pre Delay (0-250ms), and Decay (0.1 – 6 sec). The Stereo Separation knob can narrow your stereo channel all the way to mono or anywhere in between.
Last on the upper half of the GUI are individual Dry and Wet controls, rather than a single blend knob.
The lower half of the GUI is where it gets more interesting with a Preamp section and a Post EQ section. A preamp section isn’t something that you see as standard on every reverb plugin, so I like that.
I like the idea of having Drive to use sparingly before getting lost in space. Although, nothing is stopping you from going crazy with it. The Preamp section has a pre-filter (HP) of 20Hz 100Hz, too.
The Post EQ section has two frequency sweeps; Low 20Hz – 2kHz and High 200Hz – 20kHz. Each has +/- 20dB Gain.
Room041 was somewhat inspired by a famous plate reverb, and if the name hasn’t given it away, it’s the EMT 140.
Coincidentally, Arturia’s Rev PLATE-140 is a reverb plugin that I go to often, and I think it does the job very well.
I like how Room041 is put together, and based on what I’ve heard so far, it’s well worth having. It’s a lovely smooth reverb that I’ve tried on a few vocals and look forward to using more.
I’m using the Mac version with Logic, and no issues to report so far.
Room041 is available for download in AU/VST/VST3 formats for macOS (10.9 – 11) and Windows (7 – 8 – 10).

onAnalog Obsession plugins are must have :) Not many developers include oversampling in their products and that feature in freeware plugins is added bonus.

onThanks James for comparing this to Rev-PLATE 140, which has also been my go-to plate since BPB’s 1st coverage of it. Gives me a clearer idea of what to expect from Room041. :)

onPlease, don’t think this is just another plate reverb.
It is something different. And mono for mono signals.
It’s algorithm sounds very natural, it creates a very realistic sense of space. Just like you captured some room through the recording microphone.
On a snare track this thing is pure joy.

onAnalog obsession are fantastic.
Quality wise, I would place them above Waves, but perhaps not at the level of PA or Softube plugins.
