Spitfire Audio Releases FREE Granular Whalesong For LABS

Spitfire Audio has released Granular Whalesong, a freely downloadable add-on sound library for the LABS virtual instrument platform.

It’s always a happy occasion when Spitfire Audio has a new release in its LABS series of free virtual instruments. Unlike most previous entries, the latest sound library called Granular Whalesong is on the experimental side of things. It features a bunch of whale song recordings put through granular re-synthesis!

Despite its apparent simplicity, the instrument sounds rather far out. It originates from a collection of audio textures commissioned by composer Jherek Bischoff to score the stage adaptation of a Neil Gaiman novel. So, with such wonderfully unusual source material, there is plenty of potential for generating experimental naval oscillations.

For those unfamiliar with the LABS platform, these virtual instrument libraries originate from archived recordings that Spitfire Audio created as part of work done outside the scope of its well-regarded orchestral libraries. The goal of the LABS project is to amass a library of free instruments, both from the essential and experimental kind, that’s available to anyone interested.

At its core, LABS is a freeware rompler plugin that loads sound libraries available for free download from Spitfire Audio. They are all available within a single convenient installer. There are no hoops to jump through – simply install the plugin and the libraries and it’s time to make music.

Like all LABS-series instruments, Granular Whalesong follows a simple aesthetic with sliders for dynamics control and a large knob whose functionality can be customized. The instrument is available in VST, VST3, AAX, and AU formats for any compatible DAW on Windows and Mac computers. No sample workstation such as Kontakt is required for operation, as all LABS instruments run inside a dedicated plug-in wrapper.
