Voxengo has released an updated version of MSED, a freeware M/S encoder and decoder utility for PC and Mac based digital audio workstations.
MSED is a freeware VST/AU/AAX plugin which can encode the stereo signal on the input to mid-side and vice versa. The latest version of the plugin improves its monitoring capabilities by introducing a vector scope, as well as stereo correlation and balance meters.

It’s worth noting that the mid and side parameters like gain and pan can be changed simultaneously (in different directions) by clicking and dragging one of the knobs with the right mouse button. Other useful features include the plugin’s ability to extract the mid and side signals, swap them, as well as to flip their phase by 180 degrees.
The new vector scope will probably be of great help to some users, however I’ve never had much success with using such meters. Its functionality is thoroughly explained in the included PDF manual, in case you’re interested in learning more about how it works. Of course, the plugin includes all of the standard Voxengo user interface goodies such as built-in A/B testing tools, GUI size adjustment and plenty of different color schemes to choose from.
The plugin can be downloaded directly from the developer’s website, no registration required. Voxengo has recently released another freeware effect called Tempo Delay 2.
MSED is available for free download via Voxengo (6.2 MB download size, EXE installer, 32-bit & 64-bit VST/AU/AAX plugin format for Windows & Mac).
