Bertom Audio Releases FREE Air Shelf Equalizer Plugin

Bertom Audio has released Air Shelf, a freely downloadable (pay what you want) high-frequency enhancer in VST3 and AU plugin formats for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Air Shelf is a plugin designed to enhance the frequency spectrum’s high-end by adding “air” and removing harshness. The developer describes it as a crossover between a very fast dynamic equalizer and a transient shaper.

The plugin features a minimal user interface with only two controls. The Boost knob controls the high-shelf EQ, which is centered at 20 kHz. It uses a gradual EQ curve that smoothly boosts the higher frequencies without adding harshness. Use it to subtly enhance solo vocals and similar audio sources that might lack “air” and sparkle.

The Tame knob is designed to ensure a smooth top end by removing harsh resonant frequencies. It features a fast dynamic EQ and a transient shaper, which only affects the volume spikes in the high end of the frequency spectrum.

Having tested Air Shelf on a vocal track and an acoustic guitar recording, it’s easy to recommend Bertom Audio’s plugin as an easy tool for enhancing the high-end. Air Shelf is easy to use, and its boost/tame workflow can speed up a busy mixing session.

As for the GUI, the plugin looks tiny on a full HD screen, and it’s almost too small to use on a 4K resolution screen. Having the option to resize the GUI would be a welcome improvement. Hopefully, we’ll see this feature added in a future update.
