Jon Meyer Music has released Kawai Felt Piano, a free felt piano sample library for Native Instruments Kontakt (also includes WAV samples).
Kawai Felt Piano was recorded with a felt placed on top of the strings to achieve a darker sound character. The sound library perfectly captures the moody vibe of a felt piano and translates it into an expressive virtual instrument for Native Instruments Kontakt. It is completely free to download and use, as long as you have a valid email address.

Users who don’t own Kontakt can load the included WAV samples in their sampler VST plugin of choice. The NKI patch will only work for fifteen minutes in the free Kontakt Player plugin.
Jon Meyer used three separate pairs of microphones to record the library. The majority of the sound comes from a pair of U47 clones that were used to capture all the nuances and detail in the higher frequencies. A pair of Coles 4038 Ribbons were placed behind the piano to capture the low-end frequencies and provide warmth. Finally, the Neumann KM84’s were used to focus the sound and blend everything together. The result is a wonderful sounding felt piano instrument, one that you will surely enjoy playing. The piano sounds intimate and full, with plenty of character.
It would be great to have the option to control the volume of each microphone separately. However, the recordings are pre-mixed. As for the sampling resolution, the piano was captured with two round robins and three velocity layers per sampled note.
To download your free copy of Kawai Felt Piano, visit Jon Meyer’s website and submit your email address. You will also gain access to three additional free sound libraries, one of which is a unique brushed acoustic drum set.
