Steinberg released the free Taped Vibes electric piano virtual instrument for Windows and Mac.
To run the instrument, you’ll need either Steinberg’s HALion 7 or the free HALion Sonic 7 player.
Taped Vibes is available for Windows (VST 3, AAX) and Mac (VST 3, AU, AAX).
Steinberg states that the instrument takes an iconic electric piano and “gives it a completely new, smooth, jazzy, laid-back spin.”
The developers promise that the instrument can deliver anything from “buttery soul to gritty funk or chilled lofi.”
Taped Vibes was sampled from an original Wurlitzer 200A electric piano, which was first released all the way back in 1974.
The list of artists who used the 200A is a who’s who of popular music, and includes Pink Floyd, Elton John, Supertramp and Joni Mitchell. Each of The Beatles members also used it during their solo careers.
For Taped Vibes, the instrument was sampled in three ways: Taped, DI, and via a pre-amp.
Steinberg explained that to achieve this, the old tape of a Space Echo was used, as well as a high-quality DI box and a vintage preamplifier.
Taped Vibes also includes FX and a random function for the creation of endless variations.

Several different moods are covered in the tracks and it certainly sounds quite tasty.
The plugin also has a snazzy, vintage-looking user interface that is easy to use.
Taped Vibes was created at Chefrock Studios in Hamburg, Germany, which is home to a host of high-end gear and vintage instruments.
The plugin runs on Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit), as well as macOS Big Sur, macOS Monterey, and macOS Ventura. For Apple silicon–based machines, Rosetta 2 and Native are also supported.
Steinberg noted that HALion Sonic runs on Ableton Live, Cubase, FL Studio, Logic Pro, and other DAWs. In addition to Windows and Mac, HALion can also run standalone.
Steinberg is using the release of Taped Vibes to demonstrate how to sample instruments in HALion via a video tutorial series, which shows how the instrument was recreated step-by-step.
The installation for Taped Vibes is a bit of a hassle admittedly, as Steinberg listed the following steps as requirements: license activation, installer download, account sign-up, and product registration.
