Sonixinema releases Saxophone – Explorations Freebie, a free saxophone sample library for Kontakt Player.
Who doesn’t love a little saxophone in their productions?
Thankfully, Sonixinema’s latest free release doesn’t require you to forego your shirt, oil your body, and play to a group of vampires while Corey Feldman quips and reads comic books (a reference to that Lost Boys scene, in case you’re wondering what we’re on about).
Saxophone Explorations is the latest release from Sonixinema, and they’re giving away a free taster for you to whet your appetite. It is available as a library for the free Kontakt Player as well, so Windows and macOS users are well sorted.
Saxophone Explorations is a decidedly different take on the usual libraries. Samples were captured with the help of Jay Reynolds, who is a saxophonist and a lover of modular effects, which is a pretty out-there combination.
The freebie library is subtone trills, but there are other articulations if you opt for the paid version.
I will admit I was faced with a steep learning curve in regard to using subtone trills in my own compositions, but there is certainly some utility to be had. After all, everything sounds much better when soaked in delay and reverb.
Now, I’m not the biggest fan of dragging an instance of Kontakt into my VCV Rack noodling, but I found this to be quite a fun use of it. Those big deep breathy subtones make for ample atmosphere, and more sound design-oriented producers will find quite a bit of inspiration.
I found this saxophone instrument rather inspiring as a source of granular drones for my own ambient works, but it could lend itself very well to various other genres.
However, this isn’t going to be the cornerstone of your next jazz or soul composition. It won’t fit well into that RnB-flavored deep house you might be so fond of, so temper your expectations.
Still, why not check out Saxophone Explorations? There are scads of typical sample libraries floating around in the wild, but more left-field takes on conventional instruments are always welcome. Plus, it’s free, so you might as well grab it.
