If you’re after something a little different, then Indie Melodica from Orange Tree Samples might be right up your alley.

Indie Melodica is available for Kontakt and Kontakt Player, so anyone can grab this. If you’re on Mac or Windows, you’re in luck.

Indie Melodica has a three-octave range, with more extensions given to fill out the entire keyboard’s range. As such you get some unnaturally low and unnaturally high melodica sounds to work with.

You have a choice between a pair of microphones, a condenser, and a dynamic, for different tonal colouration.

Key noises can be added in, and you can make them quite subtle or overly prominent if desired. Dynamic thinning for playing multiple notes is also readily tweaked.

As you can imagine, this leaves Indie Melodica as less of a faithful rendition and more of an extended-range instrument capable of some unusual timbres.

There are a few other options you can tweak, like the velocity and how it affects the attack speed of the sound itself.

While there aren’t any built-in effects readily seen, more savvy Kontakt users could finagle in some reverb or delay to help complement the sound. That said, it does take quite well to a host of your usual creative effects.

I had quite a bit of fun running this through a granulator and filter to make some unusual synthy voices.

Indie Melodica is a fun instrument that helps call to mind the wave of indie rock around the mid-2000s. If you’ve been looking to capture the sound of wistful acoustic guitars and post-adolescent angst, you’re in the right place.
