VSTAlarm is now giving away a Kontakt instrument called This Is Phat! 808 Engine for free by their sound design label Red Sounds.
Mainly targeted to Hip-Hop/RnB/Trap producers, this sample library helps you can create your own 808 bass lines quickly, thanks to a few selected controls on the interface and a bunch of handcrafted presets.
It is inspired by Hip-Hop producers and chart-hitting artists like Metro Boomin, Murda Beatz, Drake, Travis Scott, Juice WRLD, Lil Pump, and also EDM-oriented producers like Troiboy, RL Grime, and Baauer.
There are 44 presets to choose from, covering a diverse selection of 808s, from clean to distorted.
Interestingly, there is even one patch with no samples mapped into Kontakt so that you can load your own custom 808 samples and employ the controls found on the instrument’s interface.
Btw, we also have a list of the best free 808 plugins to help you expand your virtual instrument arsenal.
The GUI offers some pre-mapped macro controls, filters, and envelope parameters.
At the bottom, you’ll find the common ADSR envelope controls to shape the volume behavior of your 808s.
Punch and Smash control the attack and sustain of the under-the-hood mapped transient shaper to give more bite or body to the sound.
A low-pass resonant filter can be employed to make the 808s sound more muffled or squelchy, while the high-pass filter can be useful to play them more as melodic lead instruments.
Drive and Comp, at the top of the interface, are one-knob distortion and compression effects to easily achieve more character.
On the right, you can toggle on and off the legato mode and add more glide to suit your playing style and 808s programming.
Overall, this instrument features some simple but effective controls and runs on the full version of Kontakt only (v. 5.51 or higher).
So, unfortunately, it’s not compatible with the free Kontakt player.
All in all, it’s a cool option to have at your disposal if you fancy having a dedicated and easy-to-use toolbox for your 808 creations without leaving the interface for a fast production workflow.
Additionally, you can check out our list guide for a full list of free 808 plugins.
This Is Phat! 808 Engine is available as a freebie until the end of August.
To get it, you must create an account on VSTAlarm, complete the checkout and use the redeemed voucher to download the library for free on the Red Sounds website.

onMODO BASS 2 CS “The purchase of any additional bass à la carte adds the fretless feature and the full suite of patterns.”
can anyone confirm that it will be unlocked with this freebie?
Thanks
TM
onI just registered the product. I can’t comment on whether all of the patterns are there. However, the fretless feature is *not* working. I am getting the message that I need to upgrade…
Gery Zenz
onThank you!
You can always see all patterns in the CS version but usually there are only about 15 patterns to choose from. for example, if you click on the hundredth pattern and you can load it, they should all work!
TM
onOkay, just checked. Only a handful of patterns are available. The others are still greyed out. In practice, it seems that the fretless option does not work and you get no additional patterns.

onThank you very much for the information!

onhow to claim it though? i add something to the cart, but don’t see j-bass
TM
onYou need to buy some paid product alongside.
TM
onAnd you need to add the freebie as paid product. It will then present the discount.

onThe process is more involved than at Plugin Boutique. You have search up and add the free product to your basket I believe.
When I bought ImpOscar2 at JRR last month I thought I got AAS Ultra Analog Session free automatically, which was the gift then. But not so, as I had not added it to my order. So remember to double check your basket and that you have all that you are entitled to before checking out at JRR ;-)
