Waves Audio and Black Octopus Sound Offer the MetaFilter ($149 list price, $29 sale price) plugin as a FREE download until September 30, 2023.

Waves MetaFilter was offered for free in another limited-time deal in March this year, courtesy of ProducerGrind. This time, Waves Audio teamed up with Black Octopus Sound to provide the plugin free of charge for a limited time.

MetaFilter is a versatile sound-shaping plugin that boasts a multi-mode resonant filter combined with a 16-step sequencer. The sequencer can be synced to the host tempo and modulate various internal parameters.

Beyond its core filtering functionality, MetaFilter has added effects like delay, distortion, and stereo widening. Although relatively basic in terms of flexibility, the built-in effects turn MetaFilter into a capable multi-FX utility and a potent sound design tool.

The built-in step sequencer allows users to modulate parameters such as Cutoff, Resonance, and Delay Time. The modulation workflow in MetaFilter is very straightforward, paving the way for quick and easy sound experiments.

I love loading MetaFilter on a simple synthesized baseline and trying different sequences until I develop an interesting bass riff. It works equally well on percussive tracks, hi-hat loops, and static sounds like drones or soundscapes.

Two additional modulation sources—an envelope follower and LFO—further enhance MetaFilter’s capability to transform and animate sounds.

The filter module itself is decent, although not groundbreaking in any way. It sounds fine and offers five filter modes: Low-Pass, High-Pass, Notch-Pass, Band-Pass, and a Comb filter. The latter is the most interesting of the bunch, and I often use it to create fly-by sounds and whooshes for my cinematic sound libraries.

There’s also an Amp mode which turns the Cutoff knob into a volume control. When in this mode, you can use MetaFilter for amplitude modulation.
