The hardware Optigan used a unique system of optical discs for sound reproduction. This concept is somewhat similar to that of the Mellotron which used magnetic tape as the medium for sound storage. Unlike the Mellotron, though, the Optigan utilized vinyl record-sized optical discs that contained musical patterns and chords. The user could press the chord buttons to select different types of accompaniment. There were different music styles to choose from, including Bossa Nova, Big Band, Pop, Latin and more.
In a similar fashion, the iOptigan app provides a large number of music styles. The base app comes with 25 of the original 40 optical discs. The additional fifteen discs can be added via an in-app purchase. Check out the demo video below to hear the iOptigan in action.
