AudioThing is giving away two free copies of the recently released Wires (€59) echo plugin to two lucky Bedroom Producers Blog readers.
Wires is a unique tape echo effect that emulates a rare 1970s Soviet wire recorder. AudioThing developed Wires in collaboration with German composer and YouTuber Hainbach, who provided the hardware unit that the plugin is based on.

AudioThing Wires – Overview
I’m a sucker for quirky delay effects. The less the delayed signal sounds like the audio source, the more I dig it.
I love the sound of long tape echoes that get darker and dirtier with each repeat. I can spend unhealthy amounts of time rotating the delay time knob to create weird pitch effects with infinite feedback. You get the gist.
So, am I the right person to write an objective review about a plugin that emulates a vintage Soviet tape echo?
No.
Let’s just assume I gave it a 10/10 rating and quickly go through its features.
AudioThing Wires is an emulation of a wire recorder from the 1970s. The hardware unit was originally manufactured for use by the Soviet military and the secret service. At some point, it also became a secret lo-fi sound design weapon of a select few musicians who had access to it.
The team at AudioThing explains that they modeled all the quirks and inconsistencies of the original hardware. However, unlike the original unit, Wires is very user friendly and not at all complicated to use.
The Echo section hosts the standard Feedback, Time, Volume, and Mix controls. Things get more interesting in the Tape section, where you’ll find the Wow/Flutter, Drops, Clicks, and Tilt EQ controls. This is where the plugin gets its undeniable lo-fi charm.
Further audio degradation can be applied with the Hiss and Motor controls in the Noise section. AudioThing also included a microphone and speaker emulation, but I preferred keeping these set to OFF. Still, they’re a good way to simulate the type of sound you’d get by recording the actual hardware unit with a microphone.
Like the majority of AudioThing plugins, Wires features a randomization button, which is a godsend if you want to try out different settings. It’s also possible to save custom presets for later use.
Wires is available in VST, VST3, AU, and AAX plugin formats for digital audio workstations on PC and Mac. If you’re a fan of quirky tape echoes, check out the demo video above, or download the free trial version to test the plugin in your DAW.
The plugin is currently on sale for €39 instead of the regular €59 price tag.

onI’ve actually got a wire-recorder, but not with any of the fancy options (no echo). But it is however incredible, that it’s possible to get anything reasonible understandable from a steel wire the thickness of a sewing thread.
Since it would be so much easier having a plugin, than to setup my wire-recorder as an echo device (though surely fun), I would very much like the “Wire”
