AudioFront have released DSP Trigger FREE, a freeware VST plugin which converts audio input to MIDI notes, design for use with drum pads.

DSP Trigger FREE is a cut-down version of DSP Trigger, a commercial version of the plugin offering an advanced set of features.
DSP Trigger FREE is feature reduced version of DSP Trigger. It processes audio output from drum pads and converts it to MIDI without the need of a hardware drum brain. It only supports single zone pads and can output up to two separate articulations. For full support for dual zone pads and positional sensing, be sure to check out the full version.
Seems interesting enough, guess I might finally try and make a DIY drum pad of some sort.
