Typically, when you watch an overview video for a new plugin, you’ll hear statements that instantly ring true and some that you want to question further.
I can safely say that I’ve never heard a truer statement from a developer than this: “It’s the only one-knob punch powerhouse featuring a dancing worm.”
I really can’t argue with that!
It’s fair to say that Punchy Worm is a bit of fun, but the fun doesn’t mean it’s just a novelty. W.A. Productions has created something fun and easy to use that genuinely impacts your music.
Let’s start with the fun stuff; the GUI shows an apple housing a hypnotic dancing worm. The worm will enthusiastically headbang to the beat with the plugin active and sound playing.
You have In/Out levels, but it’s essentially a one-knob plugin. The main knob adds transient-shaping punch when turned to the left or saturation and upper harmonics when turned to the right.
As you make adjustments, Punchy Worm applies varying levels of upward/downward compression.
There are different ways to look at the one-knob approach. It offers far less micro-management style control and forces you to trust your ears. But, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, as access to a million parameters is often the fastest way to ruin your sound.
A plugin like Punchy Worm stops us from overthinking and helps us trust what we hear more than what we see.
Although, if you find yourself staring at the dancing worm for hours, get out of the room, and give your ears a break before committing to anything.
The effect can be pretty subtle or relatively aggressive. If you need a simple way to add some extra impact to a kick or anything else, Punchy Worm does that easily. It’s also a nice way to add some grit and dirt to any sound that you think is too clean. If you want to be more aggressive, you can push the input harder to magnify the effect.
The leaf atop the apple is where you toggle Oversampling settings (up to 4X), and clicking the logo will bypass the plugin.

onI bought it and Instacomposer and both will not connect to the server. Keeps saying “No Internet Connection” when I can log into my account and watch YouTube Videos. I have other plugins by them and like them and they activated with no problems.They really need to have offline authorization files as well. If they can’t get authorized, I’m out of $32 dollars.

onIt turns out their software is for windows 8 and up and I am on windows 7. I did get an email back saying it won’t work on older computers systems.
oh well. I have gotten a lot of their software in the past but it looks like those days are over. I am a poor bedroom producer and cannot afford a new machine with windows 10.
It’s my fault for not looking at the specs but I have never had any problems with their software before so I didn’t bother to look. But I think it is vital that BPB finds out the requirements for software they post as there is a lot of poor musicians out there like myself.

onNoted. Sorry, we often include Windows version requirements but sometimes it just slips through. We’ll keep this in mind for future articles. Can you get a refund from W.A. Production? Did you ask for a refund?

onSoftware usually doesn’t come with a refund and I don’t know if my debit card will do a charge-back so I didn’t ask. Instead, I did email them just now. I have purchased 20 plugins from them in the past (on sale and they all work except Instacompser and Punchy Worm) and now on their site it says “windows 8 and up” for these plugins but you have to click on the box on the left to see it (it NEEDS to be stated up-front!). Does that mean that any updates on my other plugins will not authorized on my computer from now on? This doesn’t only affect me only. I would rather see them switch gears and remember that a lot of musicians use older machines. The demo works but not the authorization. If a reoccurring customer buys Instacomposer at $99 and it doesn’t do authorization because they are on Windows 7, they are going to be p*ssed. word-of-mouth on social media can be very bad for a company. At least iZotope, Native Instruments, and FabFilter still support my OS so I don’t have to worry about this.
Reminder to self: STOP buying plugins on sale (like Hornet Plugins, which are really good).
REMEMBER: You are on WINDOWS 7! (my machine is 11 years old but runs really really good!)

onStill having the same “Can’t connect to the internet” issue when trying to authorize this. This is my first time dealing with WA Productions…kind of a silly first impression to be honest.

onJosh from WA Productions has been kind enough to contact via email and this is what he said:
“Correct — none of our plugins can be authorized on Windows 7 anymore. I don’t believe you are correct when you say “many musicians use Windows 7″ — I respond to every single one of our support tickets and it is extremely rare that anyone is still using Windows 7. Not only are we unable to support it, but even Microsoft ended their support of it more than 2 years. I strongly suggest you consider updating to at least Windows 10 as soon as possible. Unfortunately, we cannot sacrifice compatibility with newer systems in return for an operating system that was released 13 years ago and hardly any of our users are using. I hope you understand.”
My main response was:
“I know network security is very important.But you guys need to start a email list now so that when windows 8 and 10 is no longer supported, you can let your loyal customers (which I was) know. To change policy without any announcement is inconsideration on your fan base. You are burning your bridges by doing this.
You should also code your demos not to run on windows 7 at all by having a pop-up says “This OS is not supported””.

If you don’t take care of your customers, you have no business. Competition springs up all the time and will draw them away from you. I bought Ozone 9 Standard, Neoverb, and Nectar 3 Plus last year (on sale – been with iZotope since Ozone 5) and there’s no problems. Windows 7 is going to be around for awhile just as people used windows XP when windows 7 came out because they couldn’t afford it. I was repairing computers back then and was an eye-witness of this.

Please note it was not a choice to stop supporting Windows 7 — our plugins just stopped working on the platform after a while, and it does not make business sense for us to devote the resources at this point to accommodate. “When did you send out an email to your customer list stating this change of policy? (I never got one)
When did you notify BPB, Computer Music, and many outlets about this change of policy? (of which I belong to some and would have read about it).
There’s nothing on Google about this change.
Why are you stealing people’s money (like me) by not publicizing this change and therefore not providing a service? This is called fraud and stealing.”
They offer no refund on their software. windows 8.1 users will get robbed next. Buyer Beware!

onRoman contacted me from WA Production and we were able to patch things up. Punchy Worm and Instacomposer are both authorized. Roman is working on seeing if they can do a workaround for us Windows 7 users.
